Christmas came early for ChatGPT users as OpenAI released the ChatGPT o3 and o3-mini AI models. Yes! OpenAI skipped the o2 AI models completely to launch the o3 series of AI models . Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, even joked about them (OpenAI) being bad at naming their AI models. However, according to the tweet and clue he gave, stating โho ho ho,โ the ChaGPT o3 and o3-mini seem more like a Christmas gift from OpenAI to ChatGPT users.
ChatGPT o3 AI Model by OpenAI:
The new o3 AI model by OpenAI is not publicly available at the moment. However, safety and security researchers can apply for early access to the AI model. The new AI model is extremely smart and capable of performing high-level tasks like a field expert.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT o3 is a strong model at hard technical benchmarks:
- Coding: Regarding coding benchmarks, o3 has successfully surpassed the companyโs o1-preview and o1 AI models .
- Mathematics: The new model has yet again outperformed the previous two models in the competitive maths benchmarks.
- PhD-level Science: Once again, o3 outperformed the predecessor in terms of PhD-level Science questions, scoring 87.7.
- Research Math: o3 in an aggressive test setting has achieved over 25% in the toughest, most extreme maths question.
ChatGPT o3-mini by OpenAI:
Along with the o3 AI model, OpenAI also announced the o3-mini AI model. Just like the o3 model, the o3-mini is also not available for public use as of today. The mini model is also extremely capable, but the best part is its low cost.
o3-mini will have three different adaptive thinking times in the API: low, medium, and high reasoning effort. This means users can let the AI model think for longer for more complex tasks.
Performance:
The o3-mini AI model by OpenAI can outperform or be nearly equal to the o1 model , depending on the set adaptive thinking time.ย
The o3-mini low adaptive thinking time has super low latency, close to that of GPT-4o.
OpenAI is planning to launch the o3-mini close to the end of January and the full o3 shortly after that.ย
